TYBW: EPISODE 11: EBTR

Like the episode, seeing Engetsu.I knew it would be just a holder for the double episode next week, but I liked it

The art on Hitsugaya/Rangiku part was horrible. Outrageous. smh

I enjoyed this episode too. White was menacing. Maybe Soken will pop up in the double episode next week? And that last scene with Uryu and Haschwalth was definitely ominous.

They cut out more than I thought. What surprised me most was that the little info regarding Isshin’s Bankai was among the cuts. Why do that? On the plus side, we finally have the name of Ryuken’s mother, another thing the manga never gave us.

The Everything But the Rain story is one of my favourites in the last arc. Ending the first season with it is a very good idea, also because it builds the foundation of things to come. Past, present and future will meet.

I smiled when watching the flashback showing captain Isshin, Matsumoto and young Hitsugaya. Squad 10 at that time was led by the powerful but also fun characters we know so well. They didn't change a lot. That was nice to see.

I am glad that the anime kept the scene showing Ikumi of her Unagiya business taking in Ichigo in her shop, giving him moral support. I doubt it that she is a normal human being. There is something special about her. I hope the anime will reveal a bit more about her. I would welcome it a lot!

Isshin knew where Ichigo was and was waiting for him in his spirit form. Leaving his Shinigami badge behind, he goes with him. That Ikumi could see the badge is one reason why I think she is not an average human being. Maybe she was even able to see Isshin but if she could, she kept that quiet. That Isshin knew where Ichigo was, is something that also made me wonder.

That his father is very well informed is not surprising to Ichigo. Isshin waited for a very long time but now he is finally willing to share the truth. I still think he should have done so after Ichigo became a Shinigami. This is very late. At least Isshin is doing it now.

Ichigo's mother was Masaki Kurosaki. It looks like it that Quincies take the name of the wife and that Quincy family clans are led by a matriarch. Also the Ishidas were led by a strong female leader, Ryuken's mother.

It was interesting to see the three traitors, Aizen, Gin and Tosen, experimenting with hollowfication and testing an advanced creation called White on the world of the living. White is a scary, dangerous Hollow. Isshin ended up as a test subject and being betrayed. That he felt that he was weakened by a Shinigami blade shows how powerful Isshin was and the way he fought, it was impressive.

I felt sorry for the young Quincy girl Masaki, the orphaned last member of her clan, taken in by the Ishidas because of her pure blood and destined for an arranged marriage with Ryuken, for producing an heir.

Watching this example of a Quincy clan was disturbing to me. What was going on was a form of racism. Mixed blooded Quincies were working as servants of the full blooded ones and dispensable, at least more dispensable than their masters. Was the fallen Kurosaki clan different from the Ishida one? Maybe, I hope so! I am glad that Masaki was definitely thinking differently than the Ishidas in general.

Ryuken said that his mother was lonely. From what I have seen, she was not easy to live with and looking at the Soken I know, it is likely that he tended to spend as little time with her as possible. It is likely that also that marriage was an arranged one, for preserving a pure blood line.

Katagiri is a servant, from what I have seen first of all a maid. She was serving Ryuken but it is obvious from the beginning that they were also friends. Although Katagiri was very much aware of her position in the household. It is also revealed that at least some mixed blooded Quincies like her are fighters, sent into dangerous situations instead of the pure blooded Quincies. Katagiri was one of them.

Masaki was a young school girl, younger than the Uryu Ishida of early Bleach. She was definitely more powerful than he was which is not suprising. Masaki was well trained from very early on. Not only was she powerful, she was also very brave and a fast thinker. Isshin was amazed, not surprising at all. I was amazed too when I read the manga and watched her today. At the same time I felt sad because Ichigo never got the chance to see this side of his mother.

Isshin and Masaki saved each other. What was an interesting revelation is that Masaki was also a healer. I loved the scene in which a Shinigami and a Quincy became friends and eventually it would be so much more!

The last scene is new, I am pretty sure of that. Uryu standing in the dark, alone in the pouring rain. Ichigo had help, he had support. No matter that Isshin waited too long to tell Ichigo the truth, in all other ways there was never any doubt that he loves his son, that he loves his children and also his wife. And this is reflected in how Ichigo developed as a person.

I hope the next episode will look into it what led to the last scene in this episode. Haschwalth will take Uryu to the Wandenreich. This is one of the big holes in the manga story that needs to be filled.

*******

Echt Quincy - literally: real Quincy. Meaning pure Quincy, pure blooded Quincy
Gemischt Quincy - mixed Quincy. Mixed blooded Quincy
Fuenfte Feld - Fifth Field (My guess is, it is a training ground)

Another great episode. I don't remember if it was stated in the manga that Shiro was created from a dead shinigami. Thats a interesting fact to know. Also Aizen was searching for the Vaizards. Added bonus. Seeing Aizen's rape face had me dying from laughing. That face lol.

This episode seemed to followed the manga very closely; with some omissions. However, it was a great episode.

Ichigo returned home and was concerned about how his Shinigami got to be back in the world of the living because he had previously left it Urahara. After Isshin reveals himself, Ichigo flees because of the humiliation and embarrassment he felt and the perceived idea of how his friends and family would think about him.

He arrived at Ikuma’s only to have his father follow him to have that father and son conversation. Isshin immediately knew the reason why he had returned home and explained to Ichigo about his heritage.

I enjoyed seeing a younger Captain SHIBA; along with Rangiku and Toshiro. Isshin reminds me of Shunsui with Isshin’s interaction with Rangiku. Toshiro read a report about two Shinigamis being killed. This peaked Isshin’s interest so much that he decided to go on his own without getting approval from the Captain Commander.

I believe this was also attributed to the recent death of Kaien as well as hollowfication.

Being a Quincy in the Ishida household must be a miserable experience. So much dynamics going on. I can only imagine how Masaki felt after learning that the Ishida’s only accepted her after she had lost her parents were because she was a pure Quincy that could carry on the blood line. What a horrible feeling to experience. That would hold true if she had of married Ryuuken.

Another sad thing is Katagiri was equivalent to someone looking on the inside from the outside; and never being good enough to marry the man she loved. Unrequited love is no way to live. Even the mother felt loneliness because her husband attention was somewhere else. However, their fate was about to change.

I had wished that Kubo would have elaborated more on what F. Field was; as we are quite uncertain about it.

Isshin somewhat confirmed his assumptions about Aizen’s shenanigans with hollowfication when he encountered White. I still want to know who was the base Shinigami that was used to create him (probably some random person).

We actually got to see the color of his cero
(Purple) and Isshin’s attacks and counterattacks. Of course, where would Bleach be if there wasn’t an army being severed or someone being stabbed in the back. It’s ironic how both Isshin and Masaki saved one another from death. And her perception of Soul Reapers was totally different from what she had been taught-though one can never be too careful.

Masaki proved that she can be a formidable opponent. Ryuuken and Katagiri stood above like standing in the shadows observing the battle. Ryuuken basically told Katagiri there was nothing to see here but like loose lips sinks ships… she won’t be able to hold it in
(All about being accepted and good enough).

Truly, this is ETBTR…especially knowing the fate these women will have to face.

EBTR is one of my favourite parts of Bleach in its entirety. The scenes of young Isshin, Ryuken, and Masaki are honestly so beautiful. I really cannot wait for the next parts.

That new scene of Uryu and Haschwalth!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot about that scene and it was the most profound moment of all. The rain seemed heavier like depression was beating down on Uryuu.

I agree with you, Ra and Seirei55, that new scene of Uryu and Haschwalth! It touched me so much!

I had to think of the "My son, born in the dark", quote. Uryu was much more in the dark than Ichigo ever was. His grandfather sold his grandson a very idealized version of the Quincy history. This was what Uryu lived for, his pride of being a Quincy and being a good student at school. There was nothing else in his life. Until Uryu met Ichigo who changed his life, he was a loner, never learned how to make and keep friends. He also wasn't interested. He didn't even live with his father. He left him already before he met Ichigo.

Looking at my daughter who is a young adult now, I am sure she would be a very different person if she grew up that way. I am so glad that Ichigo and Uryu became friends. Uryu made a lot of progress in his personal development but the scars will always be there. I think if Uryu and Ichigo would not have become friends, Uryu would have ended badly, eventually.

I am sure Uryu was only taught the very basics of being a Quincy, just enough to survive when faced with the average Hollow. Uryu's more advanced techniques are first of all self taught. His emotional development, his abilities as a Quincy were stunted and left him damaged. Ryuken didn't care. He doesn't want his son to be dead but I don't think he every accepted him for what he is and if he loves his son on some level, he certainly didn't show it to him.

As a mother I would go even further: What Ryuken did to his son is child abuse. You can also abuse a child without becoming physical.

Uryu stood in the rain, knowing that he lived a lie, that even his grandfather lied to him. His world collapsed around him and there is nobody to help him. Ichigo immediately rebelled against Yhwach, the man who devastated his second home, the Soul Society. I think Yhwach would have had trouble to re-educate, to mold Ichigo into a faithful Wandenreich member. Uryu is now very vulnerable and very ignorant. I think Haschwalth knows that.
